Blue Waters Ventures of Key West welcomes you aboard to the thrill of discovery in
the search for the remains of Santa Margarita. This is the ghost galleon of the Tierra
Firme treasure fleet lost in 1622 with the Nuestra Señora de Atocha off the Marqesas
Keys, some 40 miles from Key West.
There is nothing more exciting for divers and non-divers alike than the search for a
Spanish galleon filled with sunken treasure and stories full of drama and human
tragedy. The story of finding the Santa Margarita treasure on the ocean floor is
the stuff dreams are made of, that Hollywood would have a hard time making up.

But this project is more than just a treasure hunt. My project staff and I are fully
aware that to be successful on the Santa Margarita sunken treasure site, we must first
focus our efforts on underwater detective work in the search for archaeological clues
and scientific information that will help solve the giant jig-saw puzzle of how the
galleon broke up and came to her final resting place. Above all else, we must determine
whether or not the main lower hull structure and its heavy treasure cargo still exists
somewhere, stabilized beneath the surface of an unexplored area of the “Quicksands”.
There are many major archaeological questions we must first answer before we find the
elusive mother lode.
Duncan Mathewson Ph.D. and Eugene Lyon Ph.D. are both on-board to help
salvage the Santa Margarita. You may remember that Duncan and Eugene played major
parts in Mel Fisher's salvage of the mother lode treasures of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha.
The mother lode treasures of the Santa Margarita have yet to be found.
Blue Water Ventures of Key West is a Florida corporation and enjoys a joint venture partnership
with the Mel Fisher company, Motivation Inc., to survey and excavate the treasures
of the Santa Margarita.
